Best Time to Visit Uttarakhand: A Month-by-Month Guide
· 2 min read · By Tripsiana Team

Uttarakhand is really two destinations in one: the gentle hill stations and spiritual towns of the foothills, and the high Himalayan shrines and trekking trails above them. The best time to visit Uttarakhand depends on which one you are chasing. Here is an honest, season-by-season guide.
Summer (March to June): Hill Stations and Rafting
This is peak season for Nainital, Mussoorie, Auli and Rishikesh. Days are pleasant at 20 to 30°C while the plains swelter, the rafting season on the Ganga is in full flow, and the Char Dham yatra opens up. Book early, as the hill stations get busy in May and June.
Monsoon (July to September): Green, but Plan Carefully
The hills turn lush and the Valley of Flowers bursts into bloom from mid July, but heavy rain brings the risk of landslides on mountain roads. It is a beautiful, low-crowd time for Rishikesh and the Valley of Flowers trek, but build buffer days into any high-mountain plan.
Tip: Avoid heavy Char Dham travel at the peak of the monsoon. Roads to Kedarnath and Badrinath are the most landslide-prone in July and August.
Autumn (October to November): The Sweet Spot
Clear skies, washed-clean mountain views and thinning crowds make autumn ideal for almost everything except snow. Treks like Kedarkantha and Chopta-Chandrashila are gorgeous, and the hill stations are at their most pleasant.
Winter (December to February): Snow Season
For snow, head to Auli for skiing, or Mussoorie, Chopta and Dhanaulti for a snowy hill escape. The high Char Dham shrines close for winter. It is cold but stunning, with the clearest Himalayan panoramas of the year.
Quick Verdict
- Hill stations and rafting: April to June
- Valley of Flowers: mid July to August
- Treks and clear views: October to November
- Snow and skiing: December to February
