Pangong Lake, Ladakh: The Complete Visitor's Guide

Chasing that famous blue lake? Pangong Tso is Ladakh's most iconic sight — a 134-km-long, high-altitude lake at 4,350 m whose water shifts through electric blues and greens as the light changes. Straddling the India–China border (only about a third is on the Indian side and accessible), it's the emotional high point of most Ladakh trips. Here's how to visit.

Where it is & how to get there

Pangong lies roughly 220 km east of Leh, a 5–6 hour drive over the Chang La pass (~5,360 m). Most travellers come on a day trip or, better, stay overnight at the lakeside villages of Spangmik, Man or Merak. An Inner Line Permit is required (arranged for you on our packages).

Best time to visit

May to September is the season, when the road over Chang La is reliably open and the lake is at its most vivid blue. Nights are freezing year-round, and in winter the lake partially freezes. See our best time to visit Ladakh guide.

Staying overnight

Worth it: An overnight by Pangong means sunrise and sunset on the lake plus some of the darkest night skies in India. Stays are basic camps and homestays — pack serious warm layers and don't expect mobile network.

Tips

  • Acclimatise in Leh for a day or two first — Pangong is very high.
  • Carry cash; there are no ATMs beyond Leh.
  • Combine it with Nubra Valley via the Shyok route for the classic circuit.
