Spiti Valley Itinerary: A Practical 7-Day Plan

How many days do you need for Spiti? Seven days covers the essentials of the valley without rushing the altitude. Here is a practical Spiti Valley itinerary you can run from either Manali (summer) or Shimla (year-round), with acclimatisation built in.

Before You Start: Which Way In?

  • Via Shimla and Kinnaur — the gradual route, gentler on altitude, open most of the year.
  • Via Manali and the Kunzum Pass — shorter and more dramatic, but higher and only open roughly June to October.

The plan below assumes the Manali entry for speed. If you have eight to nine days, enter via Shimla and exit via Manali to make a full loop and see Chitkul and Kalpa on the way.

The 7-Day Plan

Day 1: Manali to Kaza

Cross the Atal Tunnel and the Kunzum Pass at 4,590 m to reach Kaza, the small capital of the valley. It is a long, high day, so hydrate and rest on arrival.

Day 2: Kaza and the Village Circuit

The big day: Key Monastery, then Kibber, the Hikkim post office at 4,400 m, Komic, and Langza with its giant Buddha and fossils. Five high villages, one unforgettable afternoon.

Day 3: Tabo and Dhankar

Drive down the valley to Tabo, the thousand-year-old monastery, stopping at the cliff-top fort gompa of Dhankar and a dip into the green Pin Valley.

Day 4: Back Towards Kaza and Pin Valley

Explore Pin Valley National Park, snow leopard country, and the quieter monasteries before returning up the valley.

Day 5: Kaza to Chandratal

Cross the Kunzum Pass again to camp beside Chandratal, the crescent glacial lake at 4,270 m. Expect a cold night and the clearest stars of your life.

Day 6: Chandratal to Manali

Sunrise at the lake, then the dramatic descent from cold desert to cedar forest, back to Manali for a hot shower and a proper bed.

Day 7: Departure

Onward journey from Manali, the loop complete.

Tips to Make It Work

  • Do not rush the first day. Altitude sickness is real above 4,000 m; take day one easy.
  • Carry cash. There are no ATMs beyond Kaza.
  • Expect no network. BSNL works best; most of the valley is offline.
  • Pack for cold nights even in summer, especially at Chandratal.
