15 Best Things to Do in Kashmir (Beyond the Postcards)
· 2 min read · By Tripsiana Team

Kashmir is more than a checklist of viewpoints. The best moments are often the simple ones: a quiet sunrise on the lake, a bowl of kahwa as the temperature drops, a meadow with no one else in sight. Here are the best things to do in Kashmir, mixing the must-sees with a few experiences most itineraries skip.
On and Around Dal Lake
- Take a sunrise shikara ride. Worth the early alarm. The mist on the water and the floating vegetable market at dawn are unforgettable.
- Stay a night on a houseboat. Carved wood, warm quilts and the gentle movement of the lake. This is the signature Kashmir experience.
- Wander the Mughal gardens. Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh step down towards the lake with fountains and chinar trees, especially lovely in spring and autumn.
- Climb to Shankaracharya Temple for a panoramic view over Srinagar and the lake.
In the Mountains
- Ride the Gulmarg Gondola up towards Apharwat Peak, one of the highest cable cars in the world.
- Ski or play in the snow at Gulmarg in winter, one of Asia's best powder destinations.
- Trek to Thajiwas Glacier from Sonamarg, a short and rewarding walk with snow even in summer.
- Explore Betaab and Aru valleys near Pahalgam, both straight out of a film set.
- Pony ride up to Baisaran, the high meadow locals call Mini Switzerland.

Food, Culture and Shopping
- Eat a traditional wazwan feast. Rogan josh, gushtaba, rista and more, the multi-course Kashmiri banquet is a highlight in itself.
- Drink kahwa, the saffron and almond green tea, ideally on a houseboat as the evening cools.
- Explore the old city of Srinagar, the wooden Jamia Masjid, the Hazratbal shrine and the lanes around them.
- Shop for genuine pashmina, carpets, saffron and walnut wood, ideally at certified outlets so you get the real thing.
Offbeat and Underrated
- Visit Doodhpathri, the Valley of Milk, a quieter green meadow with frothy white streams and almost no crowds.
- Spend a slow day at Yusmarg, a pine-ringed meadow perfect for a picnic away from the main circuit.
Honest tip: You cannot do all fifteen in a short trip, and you should not try. Pick the handful that match your style, leave space to slow down, and Kashmir rewards you far more than a rushed tick-list ever would.
