Chandratal Lake: Guide to Spiti's Moon Lake

Dreaming of the "Moon Lake"? Chandratal is a crescent-shaped high-altitude lake at around 4,300 m near the Kunzum Pass, on the edge of Spiti and Lahaul. Its water shifts from deep blue to green beneath enormous starry skies, making it one of the Himalaya's most magical camping spots. Here's how to visit.

Where it is & access

Chandratal sits near Kunzum Pass, between Spiti and the Manali side. It's reachable only from around June to early October, once the pass clears of snow. A short walk from the parking brings you to the lakeshore.

Camping at Chandratal

Camps operate through summer a couple of kilometres from the lake (camping right at the water's edge is restricted to protect it). Expect basic tents, cold nights and unforgettable stargazing.

Altitude note: Chandratal is high and remote. Acclimatise on the way in, stay hydrated, and keep your itinerary flexible around weather.

Best time

June to September for the fullest access and the greenest surroundings; by October the pass starts to close. Details in our best time to visit Spiti guide.
