Things to Do in Spiti Valley: 9 Unmissable Experiences
· 7 min read · By Tripsiana Team

Wondering what to actually do in Spiti? The best things to do in Spiti Valley are visiting the thousand-year-old monasteries (Key, Tabo and Dhankar), standing in the world's highest villages at Komic and Hikkim, hunting fossils at Langza, camping beside Chandratal lake, and staying with a family in a Himalayan homestay. Here's how to fill an unforgettable week in this high cold desert.
1. Visit Key Monastery
Spiti's largest and most photographed monastery, Key (Ki) Gompa rises like a whitewashed fortress at 4,166 m above the Spiti river. Over a thousand years old, it's a living home to Buddhist monks — you can watch prayers, explore its maze of rooms, and take in one of the valley's defining views.
2. Reach the world's highest villages — Komic & Hikkim
Post a letter home from Hikkim, home to the highest post office on earth (~4,400 m), then visit nearby Komic, among the highest villages connected by a motorable road. The drive up, past prayer flags and endless brown ridgelines, is half the experience.
3. Hunt for fossils at Langza
Below the giant Buddha statue watching over Langza village, the slopes are scattered with marine ammonite fossils — proof that this cold desert was once the floor of the ancient Tethys sea. Local kids will happily show you where to look.
Please note: Fossils are a fragile part of Spiti's heritage. Look, photograph and buy responsibly from locals rather than stripping the hillsides.
4. Explore Tabo — the "Ajanta of the Himalayas"
Founded in 996 CE, Tabo Monastery is one of the oldest continuously functioning Buddhist monasteries in the world, famous for its exquisite murals and stucco statues inside earthen walls. It's a highlight for anyone interested in art and history.
5. Climb to Dhankar Monastery & Lake
Perched dramatically on a crumbling ridge above the Spiti–Pin confluence, Dhankar was the valley's old capital. A short, steep walk uphill from the monastery brings you to a serene glacial lake — one of Spiti's most rewarding little treks.
6. Camp beside Chandratal
The crescent-shaped Chandratal ("Moon Lake") sits at around 4,300 m near the Kunzum Pass, its water shifting from blue to green beneath a sky thick with stars. Camps operate here through summer — expect basic comfort and unforgettable nights. Chandratal is only accessible roughly June to early October.
7. Stay in a village homestay
The soul of Spiti is its people. A night in a Kibber, Langza or Komic homestay means home-cooked meals, butter tea, and an insight into life at 4,000-plus metres that no hotel can match. It's also the most sustainable way to travel here.
8. Go looking for snow leopards (Pin Valley)
The Pin Valley National Park and the area around Kibber are among the best places on earth to spot the elusive snow leopard, along with ibex and blue sheep. Sightings peak in the deep winter months — see our guide to Spiti in winter if that's your dream.
9. Stargaze in some of India's clearest skies
With almost no light pollution and thin, dry air, Spiti's nights are extraordinary. On a clear evening at Langza or Kibber, the Milky Way stretches from ridge to ridge.
