Meghalaya Itinerary: Day-by-Day Plans for 3 to 10 Days

Every Meghalaya itinerary starts and ends in Guwahati, because that is where the airport is. Shillong has an airport at Umroi with limited connections, but almost everyone flies into Guwahati and drives three to three and a half hours up into the hills.

That single fact decides your plan. Your first and last days are largely travel days, so a "5 day Meghalaya trip" is realistically three full days on the ground. Planning as though you have five is the most common mistake we see, and it is why people end up spending their holiday in a car.

How many days does Meghalaya need?

Six days is the sweet spot. It is the shortest trip that covers the headline sights without a single punishing driving day, and it leaves room for the Nongriat trek, which needs most of a day to itself.

3 day Meghalaya itinerary

Honest warning: three days means one full day of sightseeing. Do it only if your dates are fixed.

• Day 1: Land Guwahati, drive to Shillong. Umiam Lake on the way. Evening at Police Bazaar.
• Day 2: Full day Sohra. Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters, Mawsmai Cave, the Mawkdok viewpoint. Back to Shillong or stay in Sohra.
• Day 3: Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak, then drive back to Guwahati for an evening flight.

This skips Dawki and Nongriat entirely. Accept that in advance rather than trying to squeeze them in.

5 day Meghalaya itinerary

• Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong. Umiam Lake stop.
• Day 2: Shillong to Sohra. Waterfalls, caves, canyon viewpoints. Night in Sohra.
• Day 3: Sohra to Dawki and Mawlynnong. Boating on the Umngot, Riwai root bridge, Asia's cleanest village. Night in Shillong or by the river.
• Day 4: Laitlum Canyon or Mawphlang sacred grove, then Shillong at leisure.
• Day 5: Shillong to Guwahati, fly out.

6 day Meghalaya itinerary

The extra day buys you Nongriat, which changes the trip.

• Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong. Umiam Lake.
• Day 2: Shillong sights, then drive to Sohra. Mawkdok viewpoint, zipline if you want it.
• Day 3: Sohra waterfalls and caves. Nohkalikai, Wei Sawdong, Arwah. Early night.
• Day 4: Nongriat trek. Early start from Tyrna, about 3,500 steps down to the double decker root bridge and back up. This is a full day.
• Day 5: Dawki and Mawlynnong. Umngot boating, Riwai root bridge.
• Day 6: Back to Guwahati, fly out.

7 day itinerary with Kaziranga

Seven days is where Assam comes in. Kaziranga National Park is roughly five hours from Guwahati in the opposite direction to Shillong, so it slots naturally at the start or end.

• Day 1: Guwahati to Kaziranga.
• Day 2: Morning jeep safari. One-horned rhino, elephant, wild buffalo. Drive to Shillong.
• Days 3 to 6: The 6 day Meghalaya route above, compressed by a day.
• Day 7: Shillong to Guwahati, fly out.

Kaziranga is closed from 31 May to 31 October, with the visitor season running 1 November to 30 April. If your dates fall in that window, drop it and use the days in the Jaintia Hills instead. Our Meghalaya and Kaziranga route starts at 22,000 rupees per person.

8 to 10 day itinerary

With eight days or more you stop repeating the standard circuit and start going where most visitors do not.

• Jaintia Hills. Krang Suri's turquoise pool, the monoliths at Nartiang, and Nongjrong at dawn where the valley fills with cloud below you. See our Jaintia Hills route.
• Mawsynram. The wettest inhabited place on earth, an hour past Sohra.
• David Scott Trail. A day hike on an old colonial horse track through the hills.
• Garo Hills. Wari Chora canyon, Balpakram, Nokrek. A long way west and genuinely off the tourist map.

Planning from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore or Kolkata

The itinerary does not change. What changes is your flight day.

The rule that matters: land in Guwahati before noon. The drive to Shillong is three hours plus and the mountain road after dark is not where you want to begin a holiday.

Which months change the plan?

October to April is the main season. Clear views, dry trails, everything open.

June to September is monsoon. Waterfalls are spectacular, the Nongriat steps are slippery, Kaziranga is shut and views come and go with the cloud. A good monsoon trip is built differently to a good winter one, not just booked at a different time.

December and January are cold in the hills and Shillong gets busy around the new year. Book accommodation early.
