About Meghalaya

Tucked into India's northeast, Meghalaya means Abode of the Clouds, and it lives up to the name. This is a land of living root bridges grown over generations, of waterfalls that plunge into emerald gorges, and of rivers so clear that boats appear to float on air. Shillong, the capital, is a breezy hill town of pine rid…

Places to Visit in Meghalaya

Nohkalikai Falls

Cherrapunji (Sohra)

Nohkalikai Falls

India's tallest plunge falls

Best after monsoon

India's tallest plunge waterfall drops more than 340 metres into a deep blue-green pool ringed by cliffs. Set near Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth, it is at its thunderous best from June to October.

Dawki & Umngot River

West Jaintia Hills

Dawki & Umngot River

Crystal-clear river

Boating near Bangladesh

The Umngot river at Dawki runs so clear that boats seem to hover above the riverbed. A quiet wooden boat ride here, close to the Bangladesh border, is one of Meghalaya's most magical experiences, best in the dry winter months.

Double Decker Root Bridge

Nongriat, near Cherrapunji

Double Decker Root Bridge

Living root bridge

About 3,000 steps each way

The famous double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat is woven from the roots of rubber fig trees over decades. Reaching it means a steep trek of roughly 3,000 stone steps down and back, and it is worth every one of them.

Mawlynnong

East Khasi Hills

Mawlynnong

Asia's cleanest village

Sky walk & root bridge

Known as the cleanest village in Asia, Mawlynnong is a tidy Khasi village of flower-lined lanes, bamboo dustbins and community pride. Climb the bamboo sky walk for valley views and visit the nearby Riwai single-decker root bridge.

Shillong

Capital of Meghalaya

Shillong

Scotland of the East

Elephant Falls & Umiam Lake

A breezy hill capital of pine ridges and colonial churches, often called the Scotland of the East. Visit Elephant Falls, the sweeping Umiam Lake, Shillong Peak and the lively Police Bazar, and catch the city's famous live music.

Laitlum Canyons

East Khasi Hills

Laitlum Canyons

End of the hills

Dramatic ridge views

The name means End of the Hills, and this dramatic gorge of plunging green ridges and drifting clouds lives up to it. A short walk from the viewpoint leads to one of Meghalaya's most breathtaking and underrated panoramas.

Krang Suri Falls

West Jaintia Hills

Krang Suri Falls

Turquoise plunge pool

Swimming allowed

One of Meghalaya's most photogenic waterfalls, where the water falls into a vivid turquoise pool you can actually swim in. A short walk and a small entry fee lead to this gorgeous, well-kept spot in the Jaintia Hills.

Mawsmai Cave

Cherrapunji (Sohra)

Mawsmai Cave

Limestone cave

Easy walk-through

A naturally lit limestone cave near Cherrapunji that you can walk right through, with stalactites, narrow squeezes and dramatic chambers. An easy, fun introduction to the cave systems that riddle the Khasi and Jaintia hills.

Mawphlang Sacred Grove

East Khasi Hills

Mawphlang Sacred Grove

Ancient Khasi forest

David Scott Trail base

A centuries-old sacred forest protected by Khasi tradition, where nothing may be taken out. A local guide walks you through its ferns, orchids and monoliths, and it marks the start of the historic David Scott trekking trail.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

October to April is the best overall window, with clear skies, pleasant weather and the Umngot river at Dawki at its crystal-clear best. June to September is peak monsoon, when the waterfalls are at their most powerful but treks get slippery and the river turns muddy. Many travellers love the dramatic, misty monsoon mood despite the rain.

02

A solid Meghalaya trip needs 5 to 6 days to cover Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki and Mawlynnong without rushing. Add a day or two if you want to trek to the double-decker root bridge at Nongriat or explore offbeat spots in the Jaintia Hills. We pace it so you are not driving all day.

03

The usual gateway is Guwahati in Assam, which has the nearest major airport and railhead. From Guwahati it is a scenic 3 to 4 hour drive to Shillong. Shillong also has a small airport at Umroi with limited flights. We arrange comfortable private transfers for the whole trip.

04

The trek to the double-decker root bridge at Nongriat involves roughly 3,000 stone steps down and the same back up, so it is genuinely strenuous and takes most people a full day. Reasonable fitness and good shoes are important. The single-decker root bridge at Riwai near Mawlynnong is far easier and family-friendly.

05

Yes, in the dry season. From roughly November to April the Umngot river at Dawki runs glass-clear and boats appear to float on air. During and just after the monsoon the river can be muddy and high, so time your visit for winter if the clear water is your priority.

06

A 5 to 6 day Meghalaya package typically starts around 14,000 to 22,000 rupees per person on twin sharing, depending on season, hotels and how much ground you cover. Because distances and local transport add up, we send a clear, itemised quote so there are no surprises.

07

Yes. Meghalaya is one of the most welcoming and peaceful states in the northeast, and the Khasi people are known for their warmth. Roads are generally good on the main circuit. Our local team plans routes around weather and daylight, and stays reachable throughout your trip.

08

Definitely. Since most trips start and end in Guwahati, it is easy to add a Kaziranga National Park safari for one-horned rhinos, or a Brahmaputra river cruise and the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati. We can build a combined Meghalaya and Assam itinerary.

09

Indian nationals do not need a special permit for Meghalaya. Foreign nationals should carry their passport and may need to register at certain points, and some community-managed sites charge a small local entry or camera fee. We guide you on the documents and fees for each spot.

10

Carry a good raincoat or umbrella year round, as showers are common even outside the monsoon. Add light warm layers for Shillong evenings, quick-dry clothes and sturdy shoes for the treks, and a dry bag for electronics if you visit in the rains. Sunscreen and personal medication are a good idea too.
