Best Time to Visit Meghalaya: A Season Guide

Meghalaya, the Abode of the Clouds, is one of the wettest places on Earth, so timing matters more here than almost anywhere in India. The best time to visit Meghalaya depends on what you want to see: a glass-clear river or thundering waterfalls.

Winter (October to February): The Sweet Spot

This is the best overall window. Skies are clearer, the weather is pleasant, and crucially, the Umngot river at Dawki runs crystal clear, so boats appear to float on air. Trails to the living root bridges are drier and safer. It does still rain occasionally, so carry a raincoat.

Spring (March to May): Pleasant and Green

A lovely shoulder season with warm days, fewer crowds and the landscape greening up before the monsoon. Good for waterfalls beginning to swell and comfortable trekking.

Monsoon (June to September): Waterfalls at Full Power

If your dream is Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters falls thundering at full force, come in the monsoon. Cherrapunji and Sohra are spectacularly moody and green. The trade-off: the Dawki river turns muddy, trails get slippery, and heavy rain can disrupt plans.

Tip: You cannot have both the clear Dawki river and the most powerful waterfalls on the same trip. Winter is for the clear river; monsoon is for the falls at full roar.

Quick Verdict

  • Clear Dawki river and easy treks: November to April
  • Waterfalls at their most powerful: June to September
  • Fewest crowds and green shoulder season: March to May
