Dawki & the Umngot River: Meghalaya's Clear-Water Wonder

Seen those photos of boats that seem to float on air? That's Dawki, where the Umngot river runs so clear the boats appear suspended over the riverbed. On the India–Bangladesh border in Meghalaya, it's one of the northeast's most magical spots. Here's how to visit.

The crystal-clear Umngot river

On a bright, calm day the Umngot river is astonishingly transparent — you can see straight to the pebbled bottom, and photos of "floating" boats are genuine. Take a boat ride from Dawki or the quieter Shnongpdeng upstream, where you can also camp, kayak and cliff-jump.

The border & around

Dawki sits right on the India–Bangladesh border, marked by the Tamabil crossing. Nearby is Mawlynnong, famed as Asia's cleanest village, with its living root bridge.

Best time to visit

Clearest water: Come November to April. The monsoon swells and muddies the river, so the famous transparency is a dry-season phenomenon.
