Cherrapunji Travel Guide: Waterfalls, Caves & Root Bridges

Planning to visit the land of rain? Cherrapunji (Sohra) is one of the wettest places on earth and Meghalaya's most spectacular destination — home to India's tallest plunge waterfall, ancient caves and living root bridges, all within a dramatic canyon landscape. Here's your complete Cherrapunji travel guide.

The great waterfalls

Nohkalikai Falls — India's tallest plunge waterfall — drops into a turquoise pool below sheer cliffs. Nearby, the Seven Sisters (Nohsngithiang) Falls and Wei Sawdong's tiered cascades are equally photogenic, especially in and after the monsoon.

Caves

Cherrapunji sits on limestone riddled with caves. Mawsmai Cave is easily walkable and lit, while Arwah Cave holds fossils — Meghalaya has some of the longest cave systems in India.

Living root bridges

The area is the gateway to the famous double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat — a steep but unforgettable trek. See our living root bridges guide for the full details.

Other highlights

  • Mawsynram nearby often out-rains Cherrapunji as the wettest place on earth.
  • Viewpoints over the plains of Bangladesh from the canyon edge.
  • Local Khasi food and orange-honey.

Best time to visit

Rain, naturally: The monsoon (June–September) is when the waterfalls roar, but trails get slippery. For clear views and comfortable trekking, come October to April.
