Meghalaya Honeymoon: Is It Right for You, and What It Costs

Meghalaya suits couples who want quiet, green and slightly adventurous over resorts and room service. There are cloud-filled canyons, a river you can see the bottom of, and villages where nothing much happens after dark. A honeymoon here runs roughly 26,600 to 31,600 rupees per person for five to seven days, excluding flights to Guwahati.

It is not a beach-and-spa honeymoon and it does not pretend to be. Below is where couples actually go, what it costs, and who should probably book somewhere else.

Is Meghalaya good for a honeymoon?

Yes, if this sounds like you:

• You would rather walk to a waterfall than sit by a pool.
• You want somewhere most of your friends have not been.
• You are comfortable with simple, clean homestays as well as hotels.
• Three hours in a car with good views does not bother you.

Probably not, if:

• You want luxury resorts and full spa service. Meghalaya's top end is good, but it is boutique rather than five star, and choices are limited.
• You want nightlife. Shillong has a real music culture, but most of the state is early to bed.
• You want to unpack once. A good Meghalaya route moves between two or three bases.

The honest version: couples who love Meghalaya are the ones who came for the landscape. Couples who are disappointed usually wanted a resort holiday and booked a road trip.

Where couples actually go

Shnongpdeng and the Umngot river

The clear-water river, but away from the Dawki crowds. Riverside camping, kayaking at first light, and the boat ride before the day trippers arrive. In the clear months, November to March, this is the single most memorable thing in the state. Detail in our Dawki and Umngot guide.

Laitlum Canyon at sunset

A cliff-edge gorge in the Khasi highlands where the valley drops away and the cloud comes up to meet you. Go late in the day, take a flask, stay for the light. It is free, it is quiet, and it beats most paid attractions in the state.

Sohra (Cherrapunji)

Nohkalikai Falls, the canyon viewpoints, and the tiered turquoise pools at Wei Sawdong. Two nights here is comfortable and there are good boutique stays on the canyon edge. See the Cherrapunji guide.

Mawlynnong and Riwai

Asia's cleanest village, and an easy five minute walk to a genuine living root bridge. This is the low-effort way to see one without the Nongriat descent, which matters if you would rather not spend a honeymoon day on 3,500 steps.

Umiam Lake

Twenty minutes outside Shillong, and the most underrated place to do nothing. Lake-view rooms, still water, pine hills. A good first or last night to decompress around the flight.

What a Meghalaya honeymoon costs

These are our real per-person prices on twin sharing, Guwahati to Guwahati. Flights are separate and are usually the biggest single line item.

One thing worth understanding: couples pay more per head than groups do, because the car is split two ways instead of four or six. That is the main reason a honeymoon costs more than the same route with friends, and no hotel downgrade closes that gap. Full breakdown in Meghalaya trip cost.

Best time for a honeymoon here

October to April is the window. Clear skies, dry trails, and crucially this is when the Umngot river runs clear.

November to February is the best of that window. Cold in the evenings in the hills, which is pleasant, and the river is at peak clarity.

Avoid June to September for a honeymoon unless you specifically want monsoon. The waterfalls are magnificent, but the river is brown, trails are slick, views vanish into cloud for hours and outdoor plans get rearranged daily. Romantic in theory, frustrating in practice for a short trip.

Planning notes for couples

• Ask for a private car, not a shared group tour. On a honeymoon this is the one upgrade that changes everything, because it decides when you leave and how long you stay.
• Pick two or three bases, not five. Every base change costs you half a day.
• Book accommodation early for December and January. Shillong fills up around the new year.
• Carry cash. ATMs outside Shillong are unreliable and rural homestays are cash only.
• Expect patchy network in the valleys. Treat it as a feature.
